February 14th – Special posting announcing the winner of the Thai Bird Cage Competition

Several days ago we posted about a curious event we saw at a Thai village we were passing. Hundreds of bird cages were hung up from a metal frame and following commands from a whistle, several men moved up to the cages and appeared to tick labels hanging from certain cages. We thought at first this was an auction and then possibly gambling. So we asked ‘the audience’ to come up with the answer.
We are delighted to announce that the winner is a lifelong friend of ours, Peter Waggitt of Darwin, Australia as well as Vienna, Austria. Apparently the event was a bird singing competition, which is very popular in Thailand. Prize birds can earn their owners large amounts of money.

Peter will receive a VERY large gin and tonic when we next see him!
